The disposal of lead-acid batteries in landfills and the incineration of those batteries is prohibited in Arizona.1
Lead-Acid Battery Disposal for Households
The public’s household hazardous waste is exempted from solid and hazardous waste regulation and may be managed as shown below.
Automotive and household batteries are recyclable. Locate a nearby battery drop-off site or recycler | View Recycling Locator >
Another option is to bring your batteries to a household hazardous waste collection site or save them for a household hazardous waste collection event in your area. Contact your local city, town or county for times and locations.
Lead-Acid Battery Disposal for Businesses
Businesses can manage lead-acid batteries in one of three ways under RCRA.
- As hazardous waste under the full Subtitle C regulatory program,
- As universal waste under 40 CFR Part 273 management standards | Learn More >
- As hazardous waste exempt from most RCRA management requirements under 40 CFR Part 266 Subpart G
If a battery is managed under 40 CFR Part 266 Subpart G, it can be sent to a battery collection or recycling facility.
