Border Environmental Cooperation
Environmental Support at Arizona’s Border
The Border Programs Unit at the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) works to protect the health, environment, and quality of life of people living in Arizona’s border communities.
Because air, water, and land do not stop at the international boundary, we work closely with partners in Mexico to address environmental challenges that cross the border and directly affect Arizona residents. Through binational collaboration, we support solutions related to water and air quality, waste management, and environmental health, while strengthening cooperation, sharing technical expertise, and supporting local communities on both sides of the border.
Our goal is simple: to reduce environmental risks, protect public health, and promote a cleaner, healthier border region for current and future generations.
Under the governor of Arizona’s mandate, the ADEQ director co-chairs the Environmental & Water Committee of the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC). The committee’s focus is on water management planning and environmental quality issues facing the Arizona-Sonora region, working on collaborative programs and planning to benefit the quality of life and sustainability in both states | Learn More About the Arizona-Mexico Commission >
Through the collaborative structure of the AMC, the Arizona-Sonora Environmental Plan intends to address priority binational issues in air quality, water quality, solid waste management and wildlife.

Binational Air Quality Calendar 2026
The Border Team seeks opportunities to work with young minds to raise environmental awareness and promote clean air all year long. Elementary school students from Arizona/Sonora border cities were asked to draw an image that speaks to the importance of air quality resulting in a binational calendar, which includes seasonal air quality information | Download Calendar >
