Be an Arizona Water Keeper

Revised On: Feb. 3rd, 2026 - 11:45 pm

Arizona’s waterways are invaluable treasures that need your help to be protected and preserved. Our seasonal and year-round rivers and streams provide essential drinking water, irrigation, and habitat for diverse plant and animal species. As stewards of these vital resources, we must use them wisely. The good news? There are simple actions YOU can take to be an Arizona Water Keeper. Read on for tips!

Tip #1 | Get Ready

Preparation is key when visiting Arizona’s waterways. Anything left on the ground can easily make its way into the water, so bring a trash bag and carry out any trash you find. Remember, food scraps and peels can harm wildlife and attract unwanted critters. With millions of visitors each year, every small effort counts!

Make your trip enjoyable and safe by ensuring you have sun protection, checking the weather, and bringing plenty of drinking water. Speaking of water, it’s important to check for harmful algal blooms in the area. If a bloom is present, it’s best to stay out of the water, as these natural occurrences can pose health risks to both people and pets | Learn more about health risk >

Tip #2 | Have a Poop Plan

Let’s face it — everyone poops! But when waste is left behind, it can spread harmful bacteria like E. coli and parasites that pollute our waterways and harm wildlife. Before you head out, use available bathroom facilities, and always pack out your dog’s waste. If you’re venturing further from the trailhead, consider using a human waste bag for your own waste.

Did you know?

Dog waste contains millions of bacteria and is classified by the EPA as a pollutant on par with toxic chemicals and pesticides.

We know that community efforts to protect water resources work. How? Because we’ve seen it here in Arizona! Over the past five years, ADEQ has worked on a multi-pronged effort to improve the health of Oak Creek, outside of Sedona. Efforts related to being an Oak Creek Caretaker have achieved a 54 percent reduction in baseline levels of E. coli in the water. This makes the creek healthier for everyone to enjoy | Learn More >

Keep it up, Arizona!

Tip #3 | Keep it Clean, Keep it Clear

Wherever the water is clean and safe, let’s keep it that way! Avoid washing yourself or your dishes in the water, and be mindful of soaps and lotions that can disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Use mineral based sunscreens and let them soak in before entering the water. For tips on backcountry sanitation, check out our helpful videos.

Did you know?

Chemicals from soaps and sunscreens can disrupt aquatic life’s reproductive systems and become concentrated as they move up the food chain.

Tip #4 | Slow Erosion, Stay on Trail

Plants along our streams and lakes play a crucial role in stabilizing soil and filtering pollutants before they reach the water. They also provide essential habitat for wildlife. You can help protect these vital riparian buffers by sticking to marked trails, using designated water crossings and bridges, and parking in official spots.

Did you know?

As few as 25 footsteps in dry climates can permanently damage delicate vegetation.

By following these tips, you can make a meaningful impact on Arizona’s precious waterways. Join us in becoming an Arizona Water Keeper and help ensure these natural resources thrive for generations to come!
